PRINCIPAL'S NEWS - MR PETER HUGHES
St Mary’s will see changes in our learning support team with Tammy Terry and Emilee Levett both leaving their current positions. Tammy has finished her teaching degree and will be taking on work as a relief teacher so I am sure we will see her frequently at St Marys. Tammy has been an LSA at St Mary’s for the last fourteen years and we thank her for the energy, passion and knowledge she has brought to the role. Emilee will be taking maternity leave as she awaits the birth of her second child. We wish her and her partner all the best at this special time and look forward to her visiting the school.
We have two new learning support assistants, both of whom have commenced work at St Mary’s. They are Vivienne To and Jo Tye . We are sure they will make a significant contribution to supporting all students at St Mary’s but particularly those with need.
Becoming a teacher
Included in this newsletter is information about the ‘Nexus’ program, which is an initiative between Catholic Education and La Trobe University that allows people who have an undergraduate degree in any discipline to undergo training over two years to become a teacher. Any successful applicant will be paid while undertaking the training. More information is available by scanning the barcode on the flyer.
Athletics
Mrs Challen continued her long run of providing great weather for our athletics carnival and long may it continue. It was a wonderful day with some very tired children at the end of the events. Congratulations to all who participated and to the parents that assisted in any capacity on the day. Again I thank students from Hennessy Catholic College and staff for their efforts on the day.
Parent Teacher Conferences
These are occuring next Tuesday and bookings on Compass will close on Monday. Please ensure you choose a time for your meeting.
Casual Janitor Needed
Jamie Williams, our much loved and valued janitor/groundsman, will be taking four weeks leave at the end of the term. We are after someone to fill his role for the four week period. If you know of someone that may be interested, please ask them to contact the front office. Whoever takes on the role must have or be prepared to obtain a WWCC clearance.
Holy Communion
Congratulations to all our students who made their Sacrament of First Holy Communion on Saturday night. It was a lovely celebration and wonderful to see families, friends and teachers supporting our students as they made their sacrament together.
Whole School Mass
Next Friday 24th May, we will be celebrating our Term Two Whole School Mass at St. Mary’s Church, 9 am. It is the feast day of ‘Our Lady, Help of Christians’, who is the Patron Saint of Australia.
All students will need to be dropped off to the Parish Centre before mass begins and will return to school with their class once our mass has concluded to continue with their regular school activities. All buses will be dropping students straight to Hennessy bus stop, NOT St Mary's on Friday morning. Students will be supervised by St Mary's staff at Hennessy.
Sacrament of Confirmation Registration Night
Parents who would like their child to participate in the Sacrament of Confirmation are asked to attend the Confirmation Registration night to be held on Tuesday, 21st May at 5.30pm in the Parish Centre.
Upcoming events:
May 21st - Confirmation Registration Night - 5:30 pm at the Parish Centre
May 24th - Whole School mass - 9 am at St. Mary’s Church
May 31st - Presentation Schools Celebration Day (held in Wagga)
SPORTS NEWS - MRS LEONNE CHALLEN
Athletics Carnival
We were once again lucky to have lovely sunshine after a chilly start to the day! Well done to all our students who competed with such enthusiasm! It was so great to welcome our infants students once again and they had a fantastic time with their activities and running races!
A big thank you to our small but generous group of parent helpers who assisted with timekeeping, events and in the canteen. We cannot run our sporting events without you and we appreciate those parents who offered to help and support us. Thank you also to our amazing Hennessy Students who assisted with our groups on the day - the kids loved having you coach and encourage them! Thank you to Mr Brendan Croese for organising the students to attend. Thank you also to Jen Harden and Pauline Sharpe who organised and cooked our Meal Deal and canteen for the day. It was very well received by all!!
A big thank you also to Phil McInerney from Young Little Athletics who gives up much of his time to assist us not only with the carnival but with our upcoming high jump too. His expertise is invaluable and we really appreciate his wisdom and the time he gives us. Thank you also to Young Little Athletics for allowing us to use their equipment.
Congratulations to the following students who were awarded Age Champion & Runner Up on the day:
Junior Boys: James Sinclair & Oliver Dawe
Junior Girls: Agatha Murphy & Rose Butt
Intermediate Boys: Kynan Burgess & Nixon Gault
Intermediate Girls: Marlie Oakley & Zoe Caldwell
Senior Boys: Samuel Presser & Jesse Gault
Senior Girls: To be announced after High Jump
We were lucky to be able to give out the age champions where the results would not be affected by the high jump which will be run in the next couple of weeks at school. I will update the School Calendar once the host school confirms the Western Region date.
Our winning House was O’Dwyer!
Mortimer Legends Day Tuesday 21st May
Looking forward to what should be a fantastic day of footy!! Thank you to the parents who have volunteered to manage a team. We still need a manager for both a tackle team and a league tag team please!! Students may be transported to the venue and supervised by parents. Alternatively, we will be walking to the oval at the beginning of school and will arrive at approximately 9.30am. Please find attached the TEAMS and the DRAW and the MAP of the fields. Both tackle teams and League Tag Team 1 will play at Keith Cullen and the League Tag Team 2 will play at Alfred Oval.
Please contact me if you have any questions!
Archdiocesan Cross Country
Our thoughts and best wishes were with Jayda Holt, Agatha Murphy & Indiana Brown today as they represent the Western Region at the Archdiocesan Cross Country in Stromlo today. We hope you have a fantastic day and look forward to hearing about your experiences!!
A BIG thank you to everyone who supported our annual Book Fair. It was a wonderful community event with outstanding support from our students, families and staff. It reflected the value that we place on the importance of books and fostering a love of reading in our students. A special thank you to Mrs Donna DalMolin for her organisation and supervision of our Book Fair sales. Sales from the Book Fair attract a generous commission from Ashton Scholastic and these funds will be used to supplement our school and classroom libraries.
