PRINCIPAL'S NEWS - MR PETER HUGHES
Welcome back to the 2024 school year. A special welcome to all the families joining St Mary’s this year. We trust your association with St Mary’s is rewarding and I encourage you to get actively involved in the life of the school.
It is always wonderful to see the excitement of the students as they come back to school and join a new year level with students they may not have been with before and a class teacher who is equally excited. Yesterday went very smoothly and the children across all classes were very settled.
There are several important events happening early in the term I thought I would alert you to.
Next Wednesday 7th February we have organised an evening at Young Pool to welcome everyone back to the 2024 school year.
Wednesday 14th February sees our Parent Information Sessions taking place. More details will follow next week.
On Friday 16th February we will be holding our swimming carnival. Mrs Challen will be looking for parent helpers for this and more details regarding the swimming carnival follow in this newsletter. This carnival is for ALL students in Year Three to Year Six as well as our competitive swimmers from Year Two.
On Tuesday 20th February we will be celebrating the start of the school year with our Opening School Mass. This will take place at 9am at St Mary’s Church. More details to follow.
Welcome to 2024.
Expectations for behaviour
We started the year with a Welcome Assembly this morning for all students. They were introduced to the staff and new student leaders for 2024 as well as given a brief description about who does what and who they can go to for help, beyond their class teachers.
We also covered the school's expectations regarding classroom behaviour, playground behaviour and canteen manners. The uniform code was addressed as was the correct and safest ways to arrive and leave school.
Assembly Summary:
Classroom - Listen to others, hand up to speak, inside voice, respect others belongings, keep hands and feet to yourself, keep the classroom tidy, follow instructions, keep focused on your work.
Playground - fair play at all times, speak kindly to others - no yelling, hands off others, follow the rules of the game, STOP the game if there are issues and try to solve them but get the teachers help immediately if that does not work. Walk on all paths, only running on the grass areas, use the bubbles and toilets sensibly and with care and let the teachers know if there is a problem.
Bullying - St Mary’s is a NO Bullying School. Please see the below poster which all classrooms have explaining what bullying is. Students are all encouraged to let their teachers know if they or someone they know is being bullied. We also promote students to be upstanders. This means they do something when they see or hear of bullying. This could be telling a trusted adult, telling the bully to stop (if it is safe for them to do so) or being a friend to the student being bullied and playing with them so they are not alone.
Arriving and departing school safely
Students were told to only use the following safe options:
- Supervised crossing on Elizabeth St through the front gate
- Car Park - walk up & down the path
- Bus Stop - walk in A1, sit down in your bus line in a straight line facing the Learning Support classroom. Walk to and from buses.
- Laneway - afternoons only with teacher supervision.
ICT
The students received their Student Acceptable Use Agreement and Student Acceptable Use Policy. A paper copy was sent home and e-copies sent via COMPASS. We ask all parents to ensure they sit with their children and reinforce what staff are teaching and expecting at school, regarding the safe use of devices. All agreements need to be signed and returned to school by next Friday the 9th February. Students will not be allowed to commence use of their devices until the forms are signed and returned. Parents of children in K-2 can sign for them after explaining expectations and children in Year 3 to 6 must sign the form themselves. Thankyou for your attention and support in this matter.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL 2024
The Primary Swimming Carnival will be held on Friday 16th February at the Young Aquatic Centre. This event is open to students from Years 3 to 6 and any Year 2 students turning 8 in 2024 who wish to be considered for selection for the Western Region Swimming Carnival.
Nominations for events via Compass: All students need to nominate for events prior to the carnival, as this ensures the events run smoothly. An invite to this event has been sent out to parents for students in Year 3 to 6 in 2024 via Compass. Please use the opt in permission feature to choose events for your child - this has now been updated and is accepting nominations. Heats will be made up from these nominations. The events button can be found by clicking on the 3 horizontal lines titled More. Nominations for events can only be completed via Compass.
Year 2 students turning 8 in 2024: Any 8-year-olds that wish to compete for selection in the Western Region Swimming Team may attend the Years 3 to 6 Swimming Carnival on Friday 16th February at the Young Aquatic Centre. They will be able to swim in the 25m, across the pool or novelty events, however, they must nominate for a competitive 50m race to be eligible for these 25m events. If your Year 2 child who is turning 8 in 2024 cannot swim 50m please do not send them to the carnival. For safety reasons we may only have Year 2 students turning 8 in 2024 who are capable of swimming 50m in a competitive setting. Please email me to let me know your child would like to attend with the 50m events they wish to compete in at leonne.challen@cg.catholic.edu.au
Helpers: We would love some parents to help with Timekeeping! Many hands make light work which ensures our carnival runs smoothly and on time. If you are available to help out for an hour or two please email me at leonne.challen@cg.catholic.edu.au

STUDENT MEDICAL INFORMATION - MEDICAL PLANS & ILLNESSES
CE have updated the Medical Welfare of Students Policy.
A review has been completed and we have sent home Individual Medical Response Plan forms for those students who require them. These will need to be completed at the beginning of each year. It is advised that you make an appointment with your GP or specialist over the holidays so that they can complete their portion of the form. Please also note that if your child has asthma or anaphylaxis it is important that we have a valid up to date plan (these are also required to be reviewed every 12months). If your child has other illnesses that does not require a plan but could effect their health at school we ask that you keep us informed so that we can record it on their student medical file.
Any student who is required to take medication at school is required to have a Medication Authorisation form completed. All medication must be in its original container, bearing the original label and instructions.
